Review of Alienware AW2725D QD-OLED QHD Monitor: Exceptional Color Reproduction, Top-tier Performance, and Affordable Value in Gaming

Dell Alienware's latest offering, the AW2725D, is a 27-inch gaming monitor that stands out from the crowd with its QD-OLED panel from Samsung Display. Announced by Dell Alienware, this monitor promises an exceptional visual experience.

The AW2725D's color accuracy is above average, delivering pro-level accuracy and exemplary gamma tracking. In comparison tests, it achieved a 1.76dE result, on par with OLEDs. However, the monitor exhibits some issues out of the box. By default, the AW2725D is touch green, particularly noticeable in brighter content with a lot of white and neutral tonality. This green tint means that the monitor should be calibrated for optimal performance.

Calibration improves the color accuracy of the AW2725D, making the visual impact more vivid. In the Custom Color mode, the monitor achieves visual perfection with all errors under 0.5dE. Grayscale can also be adjusted in this mode, ensuring that the monitor's output is free from any unwanted colour casts.

The AW2725D comes with a Standard picture mode that allows for brightness and contrast adjustment but has fixed color and gamma. In this mode, the monitor displays slight hue errors in cyan, magenta, red, green, and cyan. However, the gamma of the AW2725D is spot on the reference line, riding the 2.2 line perfectly with only a 0.08 range of values and a 0.9% deviation.

In Creator mode, the sRGB gamut works as intended, but the grayscale is green and there is no mechanism to fix it. On the other hand, the AW2725D's sRGB coverage is suitable for color grading and critical applications, with a 109% coverage in the volume test. Despite this slight green tint, the AW2725D's sRGB gamut coverage is still usable for color grading.

The AW2725D's color accuracy errors are within the generally accepted visible threshold of 3dE in the color tests. However, in the sRGB test, the monitor shows slight hue errors in cyan and yellow, with a tad bit of bonus green. This can be corrected by calibrating the monitor.

The AW2725D's DCI-P3 gamut coverage is impressive, with over 111% coverage in the volume test. This makes the monitor suitable for a wide range of colour-critical applications.

In conclusion, while the AW2725D has some issues out of the box, calibration can significantly improve its performance. With its excellent color accuracy, pro-level gamma tracking, and impressive DCI-P3 gamut coverage, the AW2725D is a gaming monitor that can handle colour-critical applications with ease.
