Revised Reports and Documentation for the Environment-Friendly Design and Chemical Safety Initiative

In the realm of sustainable technology, the past two decades have seen a significant focus on life-cycle assessments (LCAs) to evaluate the environmental impacts of various electronics products. Here's a chronological look at some key LCA publications in the industry.

1998

  • The Computer Display Project Fact Sheet was published, marking the beginning of a partnership between the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the industry, with a focus on computer displays.
  • The Computer Display Industry and Technology Profile was also published, offering an overview of the cathode ray tube (CRT) and liquid crystal display (LCD) computer monitor markets. The fact sheet provided a foundation for understanding the industry's evolution.
  • In August, a partnership between the EPA and the industry, focusing on computer displays, was detailed in the Computer Display Project Fact Sheet.

2001

  • A Life-Cycle Assessment of desktop computer displays was published, aiming to help the electronics industry improve the environmental attributes of desktop computer displays.
  • The Life-Cycle Assessment of Desktop Computer Displays: Summary of Results was published in March, summarizing the environmental impacts of desktop computer displays using CRT and LCD technologies.

2005

  • Two significant publications were released in August. The Lead-Free Solder Partnership's fact sheet provided information about the nature and goals of the partnership and a life-cycle assessment of tin-lead and lead-free solders used in the electronics industry. A life-cycle evaluation of the environmental impacts of selected lead-free solders as alternatives to tin-lead solder was also published.
  • The Wire & Cable Partnership's fact sheet was published, offering information about the nature and goals of the partnership and a life-cycle assessment of materials used in insulation and jacketing for selected wire and cable products.

2008

  • The Wire and Cable Insulation and Jacketing: Life-Cycle Assessments for Selected Applications - Summary was published, summarizing the results of the life-cycle evaluation of resin systems with alternative heat stabilizer formulations used in Category 6, riser-rated communication cable (CMR); Category 6, plenum-rated communication cable (CMP); and non-metallic-sheathed low-voltage cable (NM-B).

2013

  • The Application of Life-Cycle Assessment to Nanoscale Technology: Lithium-ion Batteries for Electric Vehicles report was published, presenting the results of the life-cycle evaluation of lithium-ion batteries used in plug-in electric and electric vehicles.

Recent Years

  • The Alternatives Assessments for Nonylphenol Ethoxylate have primarily been conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the United States.

These publications serve as a testament to the industry's commitment to understanding and mitigating the environmental impacts of its products. As technology continues to evolve, so too will the need for comprehensive life-cycle assessments to ensure a sustainable future.
