Right-wing contender Tarcísio declares Bolsonaro as the sole candidate representing the conservative sector in the upcoming election
In a series of recent events, Tarcisio de Freitas, the Governor of São Paulo and potential 2026 presidential candidate, has stirred controversy by advocating for an amnesty for those involved in the coup plot and criticising Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
Tarcisio's speech in Brasília, where he met with President of the Chamber of Deputies Hugo Motta, took on a tone of a request for forgiveness from Jair Bolsonaro, citing a right-wing movement born under Bolsonaro's leadership. He also hinted at a "dictatorship of one Power over another" and attacked Justice Moraes, calling him a "tyrant".
The meeting did not result in a confirmed decision on the amnesty for those involved in the coup plot at the time of writing. However, Tarcisio's efforts to discuss the amnesty intensified after criticism from Eduardo Bolsonaro was made public. Eduardo, Bolsonaro's son, stated in private messages that Tarcisio had never helped him with anything at the STF.
Gilmar Mendes, the dean of the STF, defended Moraes against Tarcisio's accusations, stating that the STF has been fulfilling its role as guardian of the Constitution and the Rule of Law. This comes amidst Tarcisio's criticism of the plea bargain of Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid in the criminal action against Bolsonaro. Tarcisio contested that Cid's testimony, one of the evidence against Bolsonaro, is not reliable due to his changing statements under coercion.
Tarcisio's speech also included a chant from the crowd for Moraes to be removed from office. He also called for the diplomatic passport of pastor Silas Malafaia to be returned.
It is worth noting that Hugo Motta, the president of the Chamber of Deputies, belongs to the Liberal Party (PL), the same party as Tarcisio. The national president of PL, Valdemar Costa Neto, reiterated that the party has no "plan B" for Bolsonaro's candidacy for the presidency.
Bolsonaro, who is ineligible for political power until 2030 due to abuse and misuse of communication tools, has been a divisive figure in Brazilian politics. Tarcisio's advocacy for his amnesty and support from figures like Bolsonaro's son, Eduardo, indicate a continued influence of the former president in the political landscape.
The debate surrounding the amnesty and the accusations against Justice Moraes continue to unfold, with significant implications for the future of Brazilian politics.
