In the heart of Thuringia, the first Christopher Street Day (CSD) in Suhl took place on a Saturday, attracting approximately 350 people. However, the event was not without incident, as small groups from the far-right extremist spectrum attempted to disrupt the peaceful demonstration.

According to police reports, these groups heckled the demonstration, seeking to create chaos. Yet, their efforts were unsuccessful, and the event continued undisturbed. This unfortunate incident is not an isolated one, as far-right groups have attempted to disrupt CSD demonstrations in various places in Thuringia and beyond.

The CSD, originally commemorating the uprising of homosexuals against police arbitrariness in New York's Christopher Street in 1969, stands today as a symbolic fight for the rights of queer people. The events in Thuringia this year are part of a series of celebrations, responding to the historical event in New York and the ongoing fight for queer rights.

The disruptions were not limited to Suhl. In Bautzen, around 450 right-wing extremists mobilized, and in GrevesmΓΌhlen, organizers were threatened and harassed by right-wing individuals. Other areas in Germany also witnessed such disruptions, including attacks on CSD participants, vandalism, and threats.

Despite these challenges, the CSD events in Thuringia this year were peaceful and undisturbed, apart from a single instance where an individual gave the so-called Hitler salute. The events are not limited to Suhl; further CSD events are planned in Erfurt, among others.

The CSD in Thuringia has faced disruptions from far-right groups despite being a peaceful event. The current CSD events in Thuringia are part of a series of celebrations, standing as a testament to the resilience and determination of the queer community in their fight for rights and equality.
