Rise in the Elbe River Level

In the heart of Dresden, Germany, several passenger and car ferry services have been impacted by the ongoing low water levels in the Elbe River.

The ferry service between Kleinzschachwitz and Pillnitz has been halted since early this morning at 6:00 AM, with no immediate plans for resumption. However, the passenger ferry in Kleinzschachwitz continues to operate, albeit with an uncertain future due to the low water levels.

Meanwhile, the ferry service between Tolkewitz and Niederpoyritz has temporarily suspended operations last Saturday, July 5, 2025, due to the dropping water level. Experts do not foresee a sudden rise in the Elbe's water level despite predicted rain, and the restrictions in ferry operations are likely to remain in place until the end of this week.

During the suspension, Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe (DVB) and Dresdner Verkehrsservice (DVS) are utilising this time for minor repairs and maintenance. A portion of the staff is also needed for regular checks of the ferry points and ships.

The final decision to operate or not lies with the ferry captain, who prioritises safety above all. All staff remains on standby, ready to resume operations should the Elbe's water level rise.

In a move to compensate for the ferry service disruptions, some ferry operators are driving buses to cater to the commuters' needs. Unfortunately, the ferry between Johannstadt and Neustadt is expected to cease operations soon due to the dropping water level.

It's important to note that the name of the captain of the ferry ship stuck between Kleinzschachwitz and Pillnitz is not publicly available.

On a positive note, the ferry between Kleinzschachwitz and Pillnitz can withstand low water levels the longest, offering a glimmer of hope for its continuous operation. Some landing points can also be moved to accommodate changing water levels, increasing operational flexibility.

As the situation unfolds, commuters are advised to stay updated with the latest announcements from the DVB and DVS regarding the ferry services in Dresden.
