Rising Expenses Associated with Climate Change
Baden-Württemberg, a state in southwest Germany, is taking decisive action to address the impacts of climate change on its water resources. The state invests over 135 million euros annually for flood protection and water ecology.
In a comprehensive analysis, the state has examined the effects of heat, drought, heavy rain, and other extreme events due to climate change. The analysis predicts up to a 20% decrease in groundwater in certain parts of the state by 2050, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
To address this, the state has derived 101 measures to make the region resilient to the consequences of global warming. By 2026, all districts and municipalities will have been analysed in detail, ensuring they know which measures to take to prevent a drinking water deficit.
The state is also subjecting communal water suppliers to a climate check, with a master plan for water supply being developed. In addition, the adaptation strategy includes measures for agriculture that can deliver good yields under various climatic conditions and urban planning that protects citizens from heat.
The funds for the implementation of these water-related measures have been significantly increased. While the initial investment was 40 million euros in 2025, this has been boosted to almost 88 million euros.
Minister Thekla Walker emphasised the importance of these measures, stating that while climate protection expands our scope of action, adaptation measures are necessary to deal with the consequences of the already strong temperature increase.
Notably, the state's measures against flooding take into account the increase of frequent rainfall in winter months leading to flooding, and summer rainfall becoming more often heavy. However, there are no specific details available about additional future state funds for health protection, green areas, sponge cities, or renaturation of glacier-affected areas in the provided search results.
In conclusion, Baden-Württemberg is demonstrating a proactive approach to climate change, investing heavily in water management and adaptation strategies to ensure a sustainable future for its citizens.
