"Road Oases Competition commences a fresh round"

In a commendable move towards a greener future, the town of Uhllingen has been crowned the winner of the "Street Oases" competition in the "Climate Protection" category. This prestigious award, presented by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport, recognises Uhllingen's commitment to climate and species protection.

The victory came as a result of the town's successful redesigns of several city centre areas, which have significantly improved the local climate. These innovative approaches include planting climate-resistant plants and allowing rainwater to permeate better, making Uhllingen a shining example of sustainable urban planning.

The project in Uhllingen received strong support from volunteers of the "City Beautiful" initiative. Last year, State Secretary Elke Zimmer visited the town on July 29 and 30 to acknowledge the joint efforts of the administration and citizens that made the Street Oases an inspiring example of what can be achieved together.

Secretary Zimmer emphasised that the collaboration in Uhllingen is a testament to the power of community action in addressing climate change. She praised the town's initiatives, stating that they offer a blueprint for other municipalities to follow.

Municipalities across the region have until October 10, 2025, to apply for the "Street Oases" competition in the categories "Climate Protection" and "Species Protection". The "Species Protection" category encourages the creation of areas that promote insect biodiversity, such as planting strips of native plants to create valuable habitats.
