Ostalbkreis Wins "Street Oasis 2024" in Species Protection Category

The Ostalbkreis has once again triumphed in the "Street Oases" competition organised by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport. This time, the district has secured the first place in the "Species Protection" category for the second consecutive year.

At the award ceremony, the two trainees for road maintenance in Ellwangen were present to receive the winner's plaque. The Ostalbkreis' project, which focused on nature conservation and species protection, impressed the judges with an outstanding professional concept.

In the "Species Protection" category, the competition emphasises areas that promote insect biodiversity, such as flowering strips with native plants. The Ostalbkreis' project included measures like planting climate-resistant plants and unsealing soil to allow better rainwater infiltration.

Last year, Uluingen, another community in the Ostalbkreis, won first place in the "Climate Protection" category. This category, which focuses on innovative approaches that positively impact the climate through redesigned areas, had the Ostalbkreis as a non-competitor this year.

The "Climate Protection" category winners will be announced in due course. Interested municipalities can apply in this category and the "Species Protection" category until October 10, 2025.

State Secretary Elke Zimmer visited last year's winners on July 29 and 30. She took the opportunity to thank the volunteers who played a crucial role in the success of the projects. Many volunteers from the "City Beautiful" initiative also supported the project in Uluingen.

The "Street Oases" competition is being held again this year, offering another opportunity for municipalities to showcase their innovative and environmentally friendly initiatives.
