Rockstar entrepreneur and lead vocalist of the renowned band Supertramp, Rick Davies, breathes his last at 81 years of age.
In a heartfelt press release, the Supertramp Partnership has announced the passing of Rick Davies, the band's co-founder, singer, and lyricist. Davies, who was 81, died last Saturday in Long Island, New York, after a long illness.
Born in Swindon, UK, Davies co-founded Supertramp in 1969 alongside Roger Hodgson. The band achieved several hits in the 70s and 80s with a unique blend of progressive rock and pop music.
After Hodgson's departure from the band in 1983, Davies took the helm and continued with the band, working with new musicians such as guitarist Mark Hart, bassist Dougie Thomson, drummer Lee Thornburg, and others. Major studio albums Davies recorded with the post-Hodgson lineup include Brother Where You Bound (1985), Free as a Bird (1987), Some Things Never Change (1997), and Slow Motion (2002).
Davies was the only original member remaining in Supertramp after Hodgson's departure, and his baritone voice was a prominent feature in the band's iconic tracks. Some of these tracks include "Goodbye Stranger", "Cannonball", "Overture of the Mad", and "Dreamer".
Notable albums by Supertramp include Crime of the Century and Breakfast in America. The band's music has left a lasting impact on the music industry, and their legacy continues to inspire new generations of musicians.
The cause of death was multiple myeloma, a cancer of the bone marrow, which Davies had been battling for 10 years. The group expressed deep condolences to Sue Davies, Rick's wife, during this difficult time.
Rick Davies' passing marks the end of an era for Supertramp, but his music will live on, continuing to entertain and inspire fans for years to come.
