Rolex maintains the enchantment of Monterey Car Week amidst evolving circumstances
Monterey Car Week, a weeklong celebration of everything automotive, took place in Monterey, California, from August 14th to August 20th. The event, now a staple in the motorsports world, offers a variety of experiences for enthusiasts and casual spectators alike.
The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering
The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, a meticulously curated car show and a red-carpet event, kicked off the festivities on Friday. This year's event featured displays honoring the 60th anniversary of the Iso Grifo and the Shelby Mustang GT350, as well as a growing JDM presence. Cars like Larry Chen's R34 GT-R, multiple NSXs, an R33 400R, a heavily modified AE86, and the Toyota 2000GT were on display. New car reveals were also a highlight, with the Lexus Sport Concept, the Gordon Murray S1 LM, and restomod icons making their debut.
Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion
On Saturday, the action moved to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca for the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. This event showcased race cars spanning decades and disciplines in the paddock. A hot lap in the new Mustang GTD during the lunch break provided a thrilling experience, particularly at the Corkscrew, a notorious turn at the racetrack. The Pagani Huayra R Evo was a showstopper, drawing crowds with its sleek design and powerful performance.
Nine-time Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen was present at the event, discussing his new hobby of gravel biking. Scott Pruett, another racing legend, was also in attendance, wearing a Rolex watch with his winning races engraved.
Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance
Sunday marked the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, a prestigious event that requires cars to be in working order and drive themselves into the show to qualify. The 1924 Hispano-Suiza H6C 'Tulipwood' Torpedo, a stunning piece of automotive history, won Best of Show and was awarded the Rolex Perpetual 1908. The Dawn Patrol, where priceless automobiles drive onto the famous 18th fairway before sunrise, added an extra touch of elegance to the event.
Monterey Car Week transforms the city of Monterey, offering experiences beyond the car shows. Attendees can participate in free shows, attend auctions, meet CEOs, attend panels and film screenings, and even car camp. However, there is an undercurrent of tension surrounding the event due to influencer culture and large crowds.
Despite this, Monterey Car Week continues to be a must-attend event for motorsports enthusiasts, showcasing the best of the automotive world in a week filled with excitement and elegance.
