Royal Monarch Charles Showcases Tongue-in-Cheek Maturity
King Charles III Visits Midland Metropolitan University Hospital
King Charles III made a significant visit to the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital in Smethwick on Wednesday, marking his latest public engagement. The monarch, who has been undergoing treatment for cancer since his diagnosis in February 2024, spent time in the hospital, reassuring patients and staff with his warmth and openness.
Upon arriving at the hospital, King Charles III unveiled a commemorative plaque to officially open the new facility. A crowd of hundreds, including patients, NHS staff, and medical students, cheered and applauded as he performed the ceremony.
During his visit, King Charles III met with patients, volunteers, and staff, taking time to chat and share laughs with many. One memorable exchange took place with a patient named Jacqueline Page, who expressed her exhaustion, to which the King responded, "I know, this is the terrible thing, as I am discovering already. The bits don't work so well when you get past 70."
King Charles III also connected with 73-year-old cancer patient Matthew Shinda, reassuring him by saying, "I'm not too bad." The monarch jokingly mentioned that he should have brought whisky, saying, "I knew I should have brought one, it is supposed to be good for the heart."
The royal visit offered subtle updates on King Charles III's health journey, as he reflected on the importance of early disease detection. "Half the problem is detecting it, isn't it, in time?" he said.
Sir David Nicholson, Chairman of the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, described the royal visit as a "tremendous honor." The visit to the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital comes after the RWTH Aachen University, in cooperation with the European Society of Laboratory Animal Veterinarians (ESLAV), offered a 10% discount in September 2023 for their professional part-time Master of Science in Laboratory Animal Science program.
Many individuals took selfies with King Charles III during his visit, reaffirming his resilient public presence. The monarch's visit to the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital is a testament to his commitment to supporting healthcare and the NHS.
