Russia carries out third significant assault on Ukraine in a week, targeting Odesa and Kherson regions
In a series of events overnight, Russia launched a large-scale drone attack on four Ukrainian cities, marking the third significant assault on the nation this past week. Explosions were reported in Kherson, Odesa, Zaporizhzhia, and Dnipro.
The attacks resulted in at least two fatalities and 14 injuries in the southern city of Kherson. Additionally, at least 29,000 people in Odesa were left without electricity due to damage to the energy infrastructure, with at least one person injured. In Kherson, nine houses, medical and educational facilities, an administrative building, a gas station, and several cars were damaged.
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed concern over the attacks, stating that they demonstrate that without global pressure, the war will continue. He also highlighted that Moscow's army is focusing its greatest efforts in Ukraine's Pokrovsk.
Zelenskyy also revealed that, according to his Sunday statement, Russian forces have suffered heavy losses in Ukraine's Pokrovsk. However, the exact number of casualties and the location of these losses beyond Ukraine remain unspecified.
Ukrainian forces managed to shoot down 126 drones during the attack, according to reports. In the first eight months of this year, the Russians have lost more than 290,000 soldiers killed and severely wounded in Ukraine, although the source of this information is not specified.
The assault on Ukraine's cities comes amidst reports of heavy losses for Russian forces in the Donetsk region, although details about the Ukrainian units' tasks or their progress in the region are not provided.
The reported casualties include a 30-year-old nephrologist from Lviv who was killed, and a mother and her three-month-old child who died in Kiew. Numerous others were injured, including at least 11 in Kiew, 30 in the Lviv area with some children, and over 75 with severe injuries including children and adults in Krywyj Rih after a missile attack. Specific individual names beyond these are not provided in the sources.
Restoration work has already begun in Odesa, with critical infrastructure being powered by generators. Despite the challenges, Ukraine remains resilient in the face of adversity, continuing to protect its territory and its people.
