Russian forces deployed 112 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) towards Ukraine, with 28 successfully striking their intended targets.
On the evening of September 3rd, Ukraine faced a significant air defense challenge as the Russian occupiers launched a coordinated attack from multiple directions within Russia. The attack was reported to have originated from the Russian cities of Kursk, Bryansk, Millerovo, Oryol, Primorsko-Akhtarsk, and Gvardiyske, which is temporarily occupied Crimea, as well as other unspecified Russian cities.
The Ukrainian Defense Forces, demonstrating resilience and determination, successfully repelled the attack using a combination of air, ground, and electronic defense systems. The repulsion effort involved aviation, anti-aircraft missile forces, electronic warfare, drone units, and mobile fire groups.
According to reports, a total of 112 strike drones of the Shahed type and various imitation drones were launched. Despite the sheer number, 84 of these drones were successfully destroyed, with debris falling in 5 locations. The remaining 28 strike drones hit 17 locations across Ukraine.
The cities of Kursk, Bryansk, Millerovo, Oryol, Primorsko-Akhtarsk, and Gvardiyske all served as launching points for the attack. The Russian regions from which Shahed and imitation drones were launched against Ukraine, as reported by the Russian Ministry of Defense, also included Briansk, Smolensk, and Leningrad (around Saint Petersburg). Over 221 Ukrainian drones were intercepted in these areas and near Moscow during one of the largest Ukrainian drone attacks since February 2022.
The Ukrainian Defense Forces' swift and effective response to the attack underscores their commitment to protect the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity. The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing tension and the need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
