Russia's leader, Putin, warns Ukraine that warfare may persist

Russia's focus remains on protecting and upholding the rights of the predominantly Russian-speaking population in Ukraine. This stance has been maintained under the leadership of President Vladimir Putin, who has also announced that Russia will continue its war in Ukraine if there's no agreement on the matter.

According to Putin, Russian troops are advancing on multiple fronts in Ukraine. The conflict, which has been ongoing for over three and a half years, has claimed tens of thousands of lives, including many civilians, primarily in eastern Ukraine.

Negotiations between Russia and Ukraine have been ongoing since Volodymyr Zelenskyy became president of Ukraine. These negotiations have been conducted by Ukrainian and Russian delegations, with key figures including Ukraine's representatives and Russia's delegation led by officials like Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin. Several negotiation rounds have taken place, focusing mainly on humanitarian issues and ceasefire corridors. However, comprehensive bilateral peace talks have been limited and contentious until at least early 2025.

Putin has suggested that common sense could lead to an acceptable end to the Ukraine conflict, but has not specified what that would look like. He has also praised the new U.S. administration's stance on the conflict.

However, there have been points of contention between the two leaders. Putin has dismissed the idea of a conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and has called Zelenskyy illegitimate. Russia has also demanded that Ukraine give up territories it doesn't control.

Despite these challenges, there have been recent signs of progress. Ukrainian defenders have seen increased counterattacks, leading to the recapture of some villages. Putin, during his visit to China, expressed confidence in the progress of Russian troops in Ukraine.

However, it's important to note that Russia denies tying security guarantees for Ukraine to territorial demands. This denial, along with the ongoing negotiations, provides a glimmer of hope for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
