In a remarkable act of faith and dedication, Molly Zimmerman and her husband, Randy, a physician in the Paynesville area, have transformed 340 acres of land in Paynesville Township, Minnesota, into the St. Joseph Preserve - a rustic retreat for Catholic renewal.

The journey began in 2018 when 280 acres adjacent to their property became available for purchase from Jennie-O Corporation. The president of the corporation at the time was Steve Lykken. With a vision for a spiritual haven, Zimmerman sent a letter to Lykken, sharing their hopes of creating a retreat center. To her delight, her offer was accepted.

The initial investment of $2,000, made as a means to help with the debt, has grown significantly. Today, the preserve boasts a value of $98,000. Zimmerman's husband worked tirelessly, taking on lots of extra hours, to help manage the financial burden.

Zimmerman's faith progressed over time. As a child, she often arrived late for Mass and was not introduced to the rosary or Eucharistic adoration until she was 24. A foot surgery put an end to her endurance activities, but spiritual direction led to her personal conversion.

Zimmerman attributes all the gifts she has received to God and gives credit to Him for the gifts she has given through her work. She believes that God continues to provide gifts for the preserve, suggesting that it is not her work but God's.

The St. Joseph Preserve operates under the motto, "Pray, work and grow in holiness because happiness in heaven begins here." The preserve offers visitors opportunities for camping, praying in a chapel, walking the Stations of the Cross prayer trail, and finding God in nature.

Zimmerman recalls a visit to the National Shrine of Our Lady of Champion in Champion, Wisconsin, where she found solace and consolation. It was during this visit that she met a Carmelite sister who offered her consolation and inspired the name for their newly purchased land.

Zimmerman hopes the preserve will especially call those who feel unworthy or have been struggling with the Catholic Church. She hopes that people will find peace at the St. Joseph Preserve, a place where they can connect with God, nature, and their fellow believers.
