Ruto calls upon Kenya to support the ambition of being a formidable force in sports

In a significant move for Kenya's sports sector, Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, the Creative Economy, and Sports, Salim Mvurya, has committed to building sports infrastructure and promoting Kenya's sports profile.

The focus of Mvurya's ministry is to boost Kenya's global sporting profile, an ambition that seems to be gaining momentum. This ambition was recently highlighted by the successful hosting of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, a success that was lauded by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.

Kindiki, in his praise, believes that the Football Kenya Federation is on the right track, and the future of football in Kenya looks bright. He stated that for 38 years, Kenya had never hosted a continental event, but the CHAN was a resounding success. Kindiki further believes that this success reflects positively on the Football Kenya Federation (FKF).

The success of CHAN has not gone unnoticed by President William Ruto. He believes that Kenya's immense sporting talent requires strong backing. In a meeting with private sector CEOs at State House, Nairobi, on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, Ruto urged Kenyans, stakeholders, and development partners to join hands in positioning Kenya as a global sports powerhouse.

In line with this ambition, the government is committed to investing in infrastructure, stadiums, and sports academies ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Kenya will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania. Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has pledged his ministry's full support to this endeavour.

The ministry's focus is not just on hosting major sporting events but also on elevating sporting infrastructure. By investing in the necessary facilities, Kenya aims to create a conducive environment for its sportsmen and women to excel on the global stage. With the support of the government, private sector, and development partners, Kenya is well on its way to becoming a beacon of sports excellence in Africa.
