Saudi authorities express sympathies following tragic Sudan landslide incident
In the remote Jebel Marra range of Darfur, Sudan, a tragic landslide occurred in the village of Tarasin on Sunday, reportedly claiming over 1,000 lives. The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A), which controls the area, has appealed to the United Nations and international aid agencies for help in recovering bodies and aiding survivors.
On Tuesday, Luca Renda, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, stated that the UN and humanitarian partners are mobilizing to provide support to the affected population. The Sudanese authorities, the UN, and aid groups are rushing to support the humanitarian efforts in Tarasin.
Save the Children deployed a small humanitarian team to Tarasin on 4 September. Both Sudan's main rival governments, the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, have pledged assistance. The African Union has called for a ceasefire to facilitate aid delivery. In response to the disaster, the SAF-aligned government announced opening the Adre border crossing with Chad to aid access.
The victims of the landslide include men, women, and children. The UN and humanitarian partners, while yet to specify the extent of their support in the affected area, are working to provide assistance. The condolences extended by Luca Renda also wished a speedy recovery to those injured in the landslide.
The condolences are not only from the UN and Luca Renda but also from other international figures. King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia have sent condolences to the people of Sudan. The condolences also included sympathies for the families of the deceased.
The SLM/A's appeal is the latest call for international aid in response to the landslide in Tarasin. The UN and humanitarian partners, though yet to disclose a timeline for their aid efforts, are committed to supporting the affected population. No specific details about the aid being provided have been given in the statement.
As the situation in Tarasin continues to unfold, the UN and humanitarian partners remain dedicated to providing the necessary support to the affected population, working towards recovery and rebuilding in the aftermath of this devastating event.
