Saxony claims the title of "Germany's Most Beautiful Hiking Trail for the Year 2025"
The Caspar-David-Friedrich-Weg in Saxon Switzerland has been named "Germany's most beautiful hiking trail" for the year 2025. This 15-kilometer trail, which leads from Krippen along the Elbe to SchoΜna and back, offers a unique connection of nature and art in the wild romantic rock world, celebrating the scenic beauty of the left bank of the Elbe.
The trail is a tribute to the life and work of the 19th-century artist Caspar David Friedrich, who spent his exile in Krippen and used locations and motifs from the region in his famous paintings, such as "Two Men Contemplating the Moon" and "Rocky Summit." The original versions of these masterpieces can be seen in the Albertinum of the Saxon State Art Collections in Dresden.
The comprehensive redesign and modernization of the Caspar-David-Friedrich-Weg was one of the most expensive anniversary projects celebrating Friedrich's 250th birthday in the Saxon Switzerland region. The trail has been redesigned with new information boards, views, and trail guidance.
The ensemble spent two days tracing Friedrich's footsteps in Saxon Switzerland and promoted the path in the final voting phase of the "Germany's Most Beautiful Hiking Trail" public vote, organised by the specialist magazine "Wandermagazin" since 2006. This prestigious national competition for hiking trails is one of the most renowned in the country.
Barbara Klepsch, Saxony's Minister of State for Culture and Tourism, expressed pride in the award, and Uwe Borrmeister, director of the Saxon Switzerland National Park and Forest Administration, stated that the trail highlights the scenic beauty of the left bank of the Elbe.
This is the second time a hiking trail in Saxon Switzerland has received this title. The last time was in 2007, when the Malerweg Elbsandsteingebirge won the title in the multi-day tour category.
The city of Bad Schandau, the municipality of Reinhardtsdorf-SchΓΆna, the National Park and Forest Administration of Saxon Forest, and the Saxon Switzerland Tourism Association (TVSSW), along with other supporters, jointly realized the project. No further information about the reconstruction and modernization of the Caspar-David-Friedrich-Weg could be found in the search results.
In other news, the COMEDIE Dresden presented the first musical about Caspar David Friedrich, "The Wanderer over the Sea of Mist," at this year's summer open-air at Elbschloss Γbigau. The musical will return for a second season in August 2026, featuring music from the album "Light Luggage" by the successful Saxon band Silbermond.
