School Closure on August 29, 2025 (Friday): Educational Institutions in Specific Regions Shut Down; Consult Information Below for Details

In various parts of India, heavy rainfall alerts have led to the closure of schools and educational institutions, causing a disruption in the academic calendar.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall in Shimla and Mandi, Karnataka, on August 29, 2025. This warning comes as part of a larger pattern of above-normal rainfall expected in many parts of north, west, and central India at least until September 4, 2025.

In Karnataka, the IMD has issued a red alert for Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, warning of very heavy rainfall. Consequently, schools in these districts have been closed for August 29 and 30, 2025. The holiday applies to all educational institutions, including junior and degree colleges.

Similarly, in Jammu division, schools will remain closed due to heavy rainfall and unsafe conditions on August 29, 2025. The closure applies to both government and private schools across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, with reopening scheduled for September 1, 2025.

In the coastal and southern states, monsoon flood risks have prompted district-level decisions by local authorities. For instance, Mumbai's Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has made decisions based on these risks. However, specific information about additional regions declaring student holidays beyond these general mentions is not readily available.

Climate change is altering monsoon patterns, causing more low-pressure systems and heavy rainfall in traditionally drier central and northern Indian regions like Rajasthan and Gujarat. This has led to a flood-like situation in Punjab, where the state government has decided to keep all educational institutions shut till the end of August 2025. Cities including Pathankot, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, Ludhiana, and Patiala have recorded significant rainfall.

In Kerala, Onam, one of the most significant and cherished festivals, will have a 10-day school holiday scheduled from August 27 to September 7, 2025. Schools are scheduled to re-open on September 8, 2025, marking the end of the festive interlude.

Elsewhere in the country, Himachal Pradesh has experienced heavy downpour, leading to a yellow warning for heavy rain in isolated areas of two to seven districts in the state, valid until August 30. The IMD has also issued an orange alert for Mandi, Shimla, and Solan, Karnataka, on August 30-31, and for Kullu, Mandi, Kangra, and Shimla on August 31, Karnataka.

In some regions, the District Collector has announced a holiday for educational institutions due to heavy rainfall. For example, in Telangana, a two-day school holiday has been declared.

This heavy rainfall and subsequent school closures highlight the unpredictable nature of the monsoon season in India and the need for authorities to take precautions to ensure the safety of students and staff. It is advised to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and follow the instructions of local authorities during this time.
