School Commences in NRW: Police Offer Guidance for Safe School Environment
In a bid to ensure the safety of schoolchildren in Dortmund and LΓΌnen, the local police force has been actively promoting traffic safety measures. The Dortmund Police, led by Torsten Sziesze, head of press and public relations, have been working tirelessly to reduce the number of school route accidents, with a significant decrease from six incidents in 2023 to five in 2024.
The police are urging road users to contribute to this effort by avoiding driving, reducing congestion, parking, and turning maneuvers around schools. This initiative aims to create a safer environment for children as they commute to school, with many opting to walk, bike, or use public transportation.
The Dortmund Police are particularly concerned about the "parent taxi" practice, where parents drive their children to school. They encourage parents to set a good example for safe road behaviour and to consider alternative modes of transportation. The police emphasize that drop-off and pick-up traffic by car often creates dangerous situations, especially at elementary schools.
Particular attention is required around bus stops, as drivers should be prepared for children suddenly stepping out between buses. To improve visibility, the police recommend wearing bright, reflective clothing or bags. Bikes should also be in good working order, and wearing a helmet is strongly advised for increased safety.
In addition to these measures, the Dortmund Police have introduced the Traffic Puppet Theater in Westfalenpark as part of their traffic safety efforts. This playful and emotional event is designed for kindergarten groups and elementary school classes, teaching children about road safety in an engaging manner.
Adults, especially parents, play a crucial role in traffic education for children, as they often observe and mimic adult behaviour. The Dortmund Police urge all adults to lead by example and prioritize safety on the roads.
