Schools in Saudi Arabia begin gradual resumption of in-person instruction
In a significant move, the Ministry of Education in Saudi Arabia has announced that schools in Mecca, Medina, Jeddah, Taif, and 12 other regional education departments will reopen a week later, on the 8th of Rabi Al Awwal. This decision comes as part of a phased reopening of schools in the country, aimed at easing congestion and avoiding traffic bottlenecks as pilgrims depart during the Hajj season.
The change in academic structure replaces the three-term model introduced under Vision 2030 reforms. The new policy will revert to a two-semester academic year for public schools, with the transition starting from the 2025-26 academic year.
The Saudi Cabinet recently approved this change, and the Ministry of Education has completed preparations for the staggered reopening of schools. Schools have been instructed to begin lessons immediately upon reopening and to adhere strictly to class timetables.
To support staff with young children, the Ministry has introduced a new policy. Employees with children in kindergarten or the early grades will be allowed up to four hours off each day during the first three days of school. This policy is in tandem with the phased reopening of schools in Saudi Arabia.
Staff must secure supervisor approval and confirm their child's registration through the ministry's "Hudoori" system. Schools have also been instructed to record daily attendance through the electronic "Noor" system, which alerts parents of absences.
Private, international, and higher education institutions have been given flexibility to adopt the academic structure that suits them best. However, they are expected to ensure a smooth transition and maintain the quality of education.
The new schedule applies to all three levels of public education in Saudi Arabia. Staff must clock in by 11 a.m. at the latest to ensure a smooth start to the school day. The revised calendar for the Hajj season is also aimed at easing congestion.
This change is part of the Saudi government's ongoing efforts to improve the education system and provide a conducive environment for students and staff. The phased reopening of schools is a positive step towards normalising educational activities while ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all involved.
