The Scottish Government has announced a significant change in the railway sector, with ScotRail set to abolish peak fares starting from 1 September 2025. This move is expected to make train travel more affordable, flexible, and convenient for passengers.

In a statement, Joanne Maguire, ScotRail Managing Director, hailed the decision as good news for both existing and potential rail users. The scrapping of peak fares aims to make train travel more accessible, encouraging more people to choose ScotRail over personal vehicles.

With the abolition of peak fares, ScotRail will offer simpler, more affordable fares. Journeys made before 9:15 am and between 4:42 pm and 6:30 pm, which previously attracted peak fares, will now cost significantly less. For instance, a return ticket between Perth and Dundee will cost 31% less than before, while the price for a journey between Inverness and Elgin will be reduced by 34%. The price for a return ticket between Edinburgh and Glasgow will reduce by an impressive 48%, costing Β£16.80 instead of Β£32.60.

Flexipass tickets and Season Tickets will also see adjustments in pricing from 1 September. While Season Tickets will remain at their current pricing until 27 September, offering a saving of at least 40% compared to purchasing five Anytime Day Return tickets at pre-1 September prices, Flexipass tickets will undergo a reevaluation to provide better value for money.

Super Off-Peak Day Return tickets will be withdrawn as customers now benefit from great value fares all day, every day. However, Railcards, concessions, and enhanced discounts will continue to be available, with most remaining valid for travel after 9.15 am.

The move to abolish peak fares is expected to add to ScotRail's popularity, making it one of the most attractive railway operators in the United Kingdom. ScotRail currently boasts a customer satisfaction rate of 91%, making it one of the best operators in the country.

Traveling by train remains one of the most convenient ways to get around, and with these changes, it is expected that more people will choose ScotRail for their travel needs. The aim of the change is not just to make train travel more affordable but also to encourage a shift towards sustainable transport, reducing carbon emissions and promoting a greener Scotland.
