Second Lady Jill Biden and husband, Vice President Kamala Harris's spouse, Vance, paid their respects by laying flowers at a memorial honoring the fallen victims of the tragedy at Annunciation School.
In the aftermath of the tragic shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis on August 27, Vice President JD Vance and his wife Usha Vance paid a visit to the affected families and an injured student on September 3.
The shooting, which took place during the school's first all-school Mass of the academic year, left two children, Fletcher Merkel (8) and Harper Moyski (10), tragically deceased. Twelve-year-old Sophia Forchas, another student, remains in critical condition with head injuries.
Vice President Vance and his wife arrived at the Annunciation campus at 12:05 p.m., placing bouquets of flowers at the memorial. They met privately with family members affected by the shooting, including the parents of the two children who lost their lives.
The Vances also visited Children's Minnesota Hospital to see Annunciation student Lydia Kaiser, who is recovering from surgery after being shot. Lydia's father, Harry Kaiser, who is the school's gym teacher, was in the church during the shooting. According to reports, Harry helped secure the room, keep children safe, and stayed with them until they were reunited with their families, even while his daughter was in the emergency room.
In a statement, Vice President Vance asked for prayers for Sophia Forchas, the shooting victim who remains in critical condition. He also expressed his condolences to the families of Fletcher and Harper.
The Vances visited the area within the church where victims were shot to pay their respects to the victims and their families. They also laid flowers at a temporary memorial for Fletcher and Harper.
A GoFundMe site has been created for the Kaiser family to help with medical expenses and other related costs. The name of the shooter, who fired shots from the church's exterior through stained-glass windows, has not been publicly disclosed.
The community continues to mourn the loss of Fletcher and Harper, and pray for the recovery of Lydia and Sophia. The tragic incident has deeply affected the Annunciation Catholic Church and School, but the support from the community and national figures like the Vices Vance has provided some comfort to the grieving families.
