Students on Bicycle Journey to Raise Awareness in Strasbourg

A group of around 80 students embarked on a bicycle journey from Budapest, Hungary, to Strasbourg, France, to bring attention to their cause with the European Parliament and the Council of Europe. The journey, which began on April 1st, has seen the group make stops in various cities, including Vienna, Emmersdorf, Linz, and Salzburg before reaching Munich.

The students' cause is not explicitly stated, but their journey has been met with enthusiasm by parts of the Serbian diaspora during their stopover in Munich. This support comes amidst ongoing political unrest in Serbia, where thousands of people in Novi Pazar protested against the government on Saturday.

In Belgrade, the protests against President Aleksandar Vučić's government continued with violent clashes between demonstrators and government-aligned masked thugs. The government, instead of engaging in dialogue, has escalated repression and violence. No direct statement from Vučić himself on the new movement was reported on that day. However, in a recent letter, Vučić acknowledged that the initial student demands were "quickly fulfilled" and claimed to be fighting "invisible enemies," indicating his approach to the opposition movement.

Meanwhile, in Bosnia, a warrant for the arrest of Milorad Dodik, the leader of the Serb-dominated entity in Bosnia, was issued by the Bosnian justice system at the end of March. Dodik, who has been a vocal critic of Vučić, declared Vučić as the only man who can hold together a strong and powerful Serbia, both domestically and internationally.

Viktor Orbán, the Prime Minister of Hungary, has also weighed in on the situation, claiming that foreign powers want to dictate how Serbs should live. This statement comes as Hungary and Serbia have been strengthening their ties in recent years, with Hungary providing significant financial support to Serbia.

The students' bicycle journey is a testament to their commitment to raising awareness about their cause and engaging with the European institutions. As they continue their journey towards Strasbourg, they will undoubtedly encounter more supporters and face more challenges. Their journey serves as a reminder of the power of grassroots activism and the importance of engaging with political issues on a local and international level.
