Special Marine Warning Issued in Alexandria: Severe Thunderstorms Approaching

The National Weather Service has issued a Special Marine Warning in and around Alexandria, VA, as a series of severe thunderstorms are approaching the area. The warning remains in effect until 4:15 p.m.

The thunderstorms are moving northeast at 20 knots, and are located along a line extending from near Gunston Hall to 11 nautical miles west of Leesylvania State Park. Impacted areas include Fort Washington, Tidal Basin, Reagan National Airport, Gunston Hall, Mason Neck State Park, Woodrow Wilson Bridge, Key Bridge, Occoquan Bay, Fort Hunt, National Harbor, Indian Head, and Alexandria.

Boaters are advised to seek safe harbour immediately until the storms pass. Wind gusts of 34 knots or greater are possible in the impacted areas, posing a hazard to boats. High waves could further endanger vessels, especially those in small craft. The threat of capsizing is a concern for vessels due to the high winds and waves.

Additionally, dangerous lightning is a potential risk associated with these storms. Boaters are cautioned to avoid being on the water during these conditions.
