Severe weather alert issued for West Germany: Preparing for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, predicted rainfall rate up to 60 liters per square meter
The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued a warning for heavy, thunderstorm-driven rain in western Germany. This weather situation, affecting the west and southwest of the forecast area, is expected to bring potential risks such as disruptions in the mentioned regions, flooding of basements and streets, high water levels in streams and small rivers, road flooding, landslides, and local lightning damage.
Meteorologists announced the warning on Monday in Offenbach. According to the DWD, individual strong thunderstorms with local heavy rain are expected on Monday afternoon and evening. The rain area is expected to move north-west and weaken by Tuesday afternoon.
From Tuesday morning at 2 a.m. until Tuesday afternoon, the weather warning is active. Thunderstorm-laced heavy rain will move into Saarland, Rhineland-Palatinate, and the west of NRW from France overnight on Tuesday. Parts of these regions are already under the weather warning, with an extension or expansion of the warnings to other areas possible, according to the DWD's statement.
If the rain warnings continue to be extended on Thursday, the cities most likely to be strongly affected include Oberndorf and Lindenhof due to landslides following heavy rain. The risk is notable on the road between Oberndorf and Lindenhof where a steep slope has loosened stones after recent heavy rainfall.
The potential amount of rainfall could range between 35 and 60 liters per square meter, with potentially more in local areas. The warning includes the possibility of localized flooding and lightning damage. The weather situation is primarily affecting the west and southwest of the forecast area.
The German Weather Service has also warned of potential danger from thunderstorms and localized flooding and lightning damage. Residents in the affected regions are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this weather event.
