In a significant move following Labour's 2024 general election victory, Shabana Mahmood has been appointed as the new Home Secretary and Lord Chancellor of the United Kingdom.

Born in Birmingham on the 17th of September, 1980, to Pakistani parents from Mirpur, Azad Kashmir, Mahmood spent part of her early years in Saudi Arabia before moving back to the UK. She studied law at Lincoln College, Oxford, and later qualified as a barrister, specializing in professional indemnity cases.

Mahmood has held several key posts across Labour's frontbench. She served as the Shadow Financial Secretary to the Treasury and Shadow Minister for Prisons. Her promotion as Home Secretary highlights Prime Minister Keir Starmer's serious view on immigration and security issues.

Prior to her latest appointment, Mahmood served as the Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor from 2024 to 2025. During this tenure, she introduced major legislation in Parliament aimed at reforming the prison system and implemented early prisoner release schemes to relieve pressure on jails.

Mahmood's appointment as Home Secretary comes after she briefly stepped away from frontline politics in 2015 during Jeremy Corbyn's leadership but returned under Keir Starmer. She is the first Muslim woman to lead the Home Office.

In her new role, Mahmood inherits responsibility for tackling asylum backlogs, deportations, police reform, and inquiries into grooming gangs. Mahmood is often associated with Labour's "blue Labour" wing, favoring tougher stances on law and order while maintaining ties with the party's progressive base.
