Rossmann Introduces Sustainable Wine Packaging in Germany

Drugstore chain Rossmann has made a splash in the German market with its innovative new wine product, bottled in cardboard. This novelty is not just a step forward in packaging design, but also a statement for sustainability.

The cardboard bottle, weighing approximately 82 grams, is a departure from traditional glass bottles. It consists of an inner plastic tube and an outer paper shell, made of 94% recycled cardboard. This design not only saves on weight, averaging five times less than a traditional glass bottle, but also reduces CO2 emissions by 84 percent compared to glass bottles, due to its lighter weight and material.

Rossmann is the first retailer in Germany to bottle its wine in cardboard bottles. The white Burgundy for the pilot project comes from the winery cooperative Achkarren in Baden, while the wine offered in the Palatinate (Pfalz) region in Germany is also available.

The new packaging concept was presented at the beginning of the week. The cardboard bottle is shatterproof and can be easily disposed of in the paper container or yellow bin after consumption. When pouring wine from the cardboard bottle, the bag shrinks and keeps the wine fresh longer.

This sustainable packaging initiative is part of Rossmann's broader redesign of its branches, aiming to show more emotions in the furnishings. Rossmann is proud to be able to offer this wine innovation together with their long-standing partner from the Kaiserstuhl.

The cardboard bottle resembles the "Bag-in-Box" design, typically used for larger quantities of wine. However, Rossmann's cardboard bottle packaging is a novelty in the German market, making it an exciting development for environmentally conscious consumers.

With over 2000 branches across Germany, this new wine product is now widely available for customers to enjoy. Rossmann claims that this new packaging promotes more sustainability, and it's a step in the right direction for a greener future.
