Shure Accomplishes Sustainable Packaging Targets by the Year 2023

In the world of audio technology, Shure is making waves not just for its high-quality products, but also for its commitment to sustainability.

The Chicago-based company has taken significant strides in reducing its environmental footprint. For instance, over the past five years, Shure has successfully eliminated nearly 30 million AA batteries from ending up in landfills. This impressive feat was achieved through the widespread adoption of rechargeable batteries in their products. One Broadway show alone saved over 21,000 AA batteries from landfills by using Shure's rechargeable system.

Shure's commitment to sustainability extends beyond its products. The company is a member of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition, a group dedicated to advancing sustainable packaging and reducing waste. Key sustainable packaging initiatives include replacing thermoform trays with molded pulp, reducing plastic materials, and right-sizing packaging.

Shure's manufacturing plants also prioritise recycling. Cardboard boxes and wooden pallets are recycled, keeping tons of cardboard waste and nearly 5,000 wooden pallets out of landfills.

The company's approach to sustainability is holistic. Chris Schyvinck, President and CEO at Shure, stated that "Green isn't just in our logo, it's an important part of who we are." In line with this, Shure has set a goal to increase recyclable and/or renewable packaging for new products to 75% by 2023, 90% by 2025, and 100% by 2030.

Shure also ensures environmental compliance with international regulations like RoHS, REACH, and WEEE. A cross-functional Shure team regularly reviews these regulations to maintain environmental standards.

Moreover, Shure encourages its suppliers to adopt sustainable practices. While specific information about these suppliers isn't publicly available, the company works with those using solar power and recycled water in their operations.

Shure's Wireless Workbench Software allows for remote monitoring of power use, helping to optimise power consumption. The company has engineered its products to use less energy in "down" modes, further contributing to sustainability.

By 2027, Shure estimates that more than 100 million AA batteries will have been saved from landfills due to their rechargeable batteries. This is a testament to Shure's commitment to being environmentally responsible, not just with their products, but also with their people, facilities, and communities.
