Significant strides in the recovery process of the GREIF reported.

The historic sailing school ship GREIF is currently undergoing a significant renovation at the Maritime Industrial and Commercial Park Volkswerft in Stralsund. This ambitious project is being supported by a broad alliance, including the Commissioner for Culture and Media of the Federal Government, the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the University and Hanseatic City of Greifswald, the East German Savings Banks Foundation, the Support Association Sailing School Ship GREIF e.V., and various other foundations, associations, and private donations.

The heart of the renovation involves the creation of a lightweight, corrosion-resistant aluminum card house for the rear area of the ship. Parallel to the work on the rigging, the production of new superstructures is underway. The bowsprit, on which the foresails will later be attached, has already been installed. A central deck house is being produced, and an international team is working to make the masts of the historic ship seaworthy again. The front of the two masts, known as the foresail mast, has been successfully hoisted on board and securely anchored.

Steel cables are being tightened to securely hold the masts on the ship in the future. Navigation, electricity, heating, sanitation, ventilation, and other necessary systems will be installed upon the ship's return to the water. The interior fitting will also take place at this time.

The GREIF Foundation, the name of the foundation financing the extensive restoration, is providing financial support for the rigging's extensive restoration. For updates on the progress of the renovation, visit the building diary of the sailing school ship at www.sssgreif.de/logbuch, or follow weekly updates on Instagram (sss_greif) and Facebook (@segelschulschiff.greif).

The ship is expected to leave the shipyard hall and be launched into the water this year. A new canopy for a protected entrance to the forecastle is being created and is expected to be installed on board the GREIF in the coming weeks.

The renovation of the GREIF promises to breathe new life into this historic sailing school ship, ensuring its continued service for future generations.
