Competition between smart ring manufacturers escalates as Ultrahuman files a lawsuit against Oura, claiming patent infringement in their product designs

In a move that escalates the ongoing legal battle between the two smart ring manufacturers, Ultrahuman has scheduled a court hearing on August 22, 2023, in the Delhi High Court. The company has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Oura, alleging that the competitor has copied its advanced intellectual property.

The lawsuit alleges that Oura has infringed upon Ultrahuman's patented features, including women's health features, circadian health tools, and glucose monitoring platform. Ultrahuman claims that Oura has benefited from Ultrahuman's investment in public health without a license to do so.

This is not the first time Oura has been accused of patent infringement. In the past, the company has sued Ultrahuman and RingConn for similar claims in the U.S.

Oura, on the other hand, has claimed that its competitors, including Ultrahuman, have copied key features such as Oura's curved battery to fit the ring shape and advanced sensors. The company also alleges that its competitors purchased Oura rings to reverse engineer them and study their inner workings.

The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) initially ruled in favor of Oura's infringement claims, blocking all of Ultrahuman's smart rings and components from the U.S. market. However, a final decision on the U.S. case is still to come.

In response to the new suit in India, an Oura spokesperson stated that Ultrahuman's lawsuit has no merit and is a blatant attempt to distract from their decisive U.S. defeat.

The lawsuit is the latest salvo in the legal battle between the two smart ring manufacturers, with both companies accusing each other of intellectual property theft. The outcome of the case in India, as well as the pending U.S. decision, will likely have significant implications for the smart wearable industry.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
