In the picturesque region of Huercal-Overa, Almeria, a significant stride towards sustainability has been made in the meat industry. The local company, Jamones de Seroฬn Cortijo de Canata, has been recognised for its commitment to competing on the international stage and its innovative practices.

The company, renowned for its exceptional standards of ham production, has been the only one authorised to export its Serrano hams to China, the US, and Mexico. This achievement showcases the potential for Spanish products to compete on a global scale.

The Huercal-Overa project, funded by a grant from the Andalucian Regional Government, aims to enhance the sustainability of the meat industry through innovative waste management practices. One such initiative is the processing of pig slurry and its use as fertiliser for agricultural benefits.

The project has led to the creation of one full-time job at the facility and strengthened 10 existing ones. Moreover, the installation of a solar power plant at Jamones de Seroฬn Cortijo de Canata has reduced energy costs, improved efficiency, and strengthened sustainability at the facility.

The success of Jamones de Seroฬn Cortijo de Canata serves as an example for other industries in Almeria to adopt sustainable practices. The Andalucian government recognises the contributions of local residents in ensuring the quality of major meat exports.

The regional government has also lauded the company for its commitment to competing in international markets. The acclaim and special attention received by Jamones de Seroฬn Cortijo de Canata underscore the potential for Almeria's products to make a mark globally.

The Huercal-Overa project is part of the Andalucian Regional Government's programme to develop rural areas of Almeria. It is a testament to the government's commitment to fostering sustainable growth in the region. The project's contribution to the development of rural areas is evident, as it continues to drive progress and create opportunities in the region.
