Sony's alleged PS6 handheld console specifications boast cutting-edge, next-generation processor technologies at a comparatively low price point, which currently struggles to cover today's hardware costs.
In the world of gaming, whispers of a new handheld console have been circulating. According to a YouTube channel called "Moore's Law is Dead" (MLiD), detailed information and alleged internal documents about the custom AMD APU called Canis have been published, suggesting that this could be the heart of Sony's rumoured PlayStation 6 handheld.
The Canis chip, it is said, is manufactured on TSMC's N3 process node and boasts a CPU size of 135 square millimetres. The GPU section of Canis is said to have 16 RDNA 5 compute units, promising impressive graphics capabilities.
The CPU of Canis consists of four Zen 6c cores and two Zen 6 Low Power cores, providing a balance between power and efficiency. The handheld PlayStation is rumoured to have a GPU clock speed of around 1.65 GHz in docked mode and up to 75% of a PS5's native rendering power.
However, there are questions about how four, low-clocked cores would handle software designed for up to eight cores in the handheld PlayStation. It's a puzzle that remains to be solved.
While we wait for more concrete information, it's worth noting that the current generation consoles from Microsoft and Sony are nearing the end of their natural product cycles. This could pave the way for new entries in the handheld gaming market.
In the meantime, other handheld gaming devices are making waves. The Lenovo Legion Go S SteamOS ed. is the best overall handheld, while the Steam Deck takes the crown for the best budget handheld. The Lenovo Legion Go is the best big screen handheld, and the Ayaneo Flip DS is the best compact handheld.
The MSI Claw 8 AI, on the other hand, is the best Windows handheld. Meanwhile, the PlayStation Portal, priced at $200, offers a basic gaming experience with its minimal specs.
Interestingly, rumours suggest that the handheld PlayStation is backwards compatible with PS5/PS4 games. However, Sony has not confirmed this and the price of a PS6 handheld is rumoured to be higher than $499, as setting it that low wouldn't be physically profitable.
As we wait for more news, the gaming landscape remains exciting and full of possibilities. Stay tuned for updates on the rumoured PlayStation 6 handheld, codenamed Canis.
