South African market gap addressed through construction of Air Products' CO2 plant
Air Products Launches New CO2 Production Facility in South Africa
Air Products has announced the launch of a new carbon dioxide (CO2) production facility in Sasolburg, South Africa. The facility, named Midlands CO2, is producing food and beverage-grade liquid CO2.
The new facility was commissioned in April and is located within the Sasolburg industrial complex. It utilises waste gas from Sasol's Midlands N-Butanol plant as its raw source, making it an environmentally-friendly addition to the region.
For several years, Air Products assessed the potential of the gas stream from Sasol's Midlands N-Butanol plant for purification into high-grade CO2. In 2019, the company identified the plant as a viable source, and the plans for the construction of the CO2 production plant were set in motion.
The Midlands CO2 facility was built in response to growing market demand for CO2 during busy summer periods or when existing sources are unavailable. This new facility will help to meet the increased demand, ensuring a steady supply of high-quality CO2 for the food and beverage industry.
Sasol Limited, the group responsible for the monitoring and planning of the construction of the CO2 production plant, is confident that this new facility will contribute positively to the local economy and the industry as a whole.
