Eligibility and Application Process
To be eligible for a digital nomad visa, you must either be employed by or own a company established outside of South Africa, or be a freelancer or self-employed with clients located outside of the country. The application process involves submitting a completed visa application, along with required documents such as copies of your passport, passport photos, proof of remote work, three months of bank statements, a certified criminal background check, proof of international health insurance, the address of your accommodations in South Africa, and all necessary documents for the visa application process.
Original and copies of documents should be brought to the visa appointment, which takes place at a South African embassy or VFS office in your country of residence. As of now, the official detailed conditions for South Africa's Digital Nomad Visa are not widely available, and specific requirements remain to be officially confirmed.
Staying Longer than 183 Days
Digital nomads from countries with a Double Taxation Agreement (DTA) with South Africa staying longer than 183 days in a 12-month period must register with the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and pay local income tax. Those from countries that do not have a DTA with South Africa must automatically register for SARS regardless of how long they intend to stay in the country.
