South Africa's T20 star delivers inaugural ODI performance with a knock for the history books
In the opening One-Day International (ODI) against Australia, Dewald Brevis made a memorable debut, scoring 180 runs and providing a spectacular show. Brevis walked in to bat at the fall of Tristan Stubbs' wicket and immediately made an impact, scoring a six off his very first ball.
South Africa, powered by Aiden Markram's 82, posted a total of 296 runs, a total that Australia fell short of by 98 runs. The South African total was supported by Keshav Maharaj's performance and Prenelan Subrayen's impressive debut appearance. Maharaj took his maiden ODI five-wicket haul, while Subrayen took figures of 1-46 in ten overs.
Matthew Breetzke also contributed with a fifty, adding to his impressive 290 runs from his first three ODI innings. Temba Bavuma also scored a fifty in the match, further bolstering South Africa's total.
Travis Head was the standout Australian player, taking four wickets in the match. However, Mitchell Marsh was the only Australian batsman to cross fifty in the match.
Brevis, fondly known as 'Baby AB' after his resemblance to former South African great AB de Villiers, had already made a name for himself earlier this year when he made his Test debut against Zimbabwe and scored 51 & 3 on Test debut. He also impressed in the preceding T20I series, scoring 180 runs, including a 41-ball hundred.
Interestingly, Brevis faced the Zimbabwe cricket team in his Test debut on June 28, 2025, where he also hit 30 (35) in the game Wiaan Mulder hit his record-breaking 367*.
