South Korea's National Security Adviser Discusses Diplomatic Negotiations Ahead of President's Trip

In the heart of Seoul, at the Yongsan presidential office, National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac addressed a press conference on the eve of President Lee Jae Myung's six-day trip to Japan and the United States.

During the conference, Wi Sung-lac emphasized the importance of trilateral diplomatic negotiations between South Korea, Japan, and the United States. He highlighted the modernization of the Korea-U.S. alliance and enhanced strategic communication between South Korea and Japan as key strategies to address shared economic and social challenges, as well as historical issues.

Wi Sung-lac views trilateral cooperation as central to South Korea’s diplomacy and supports developing flexible, forward-looking discussions, including on North Korea security threats. The press conference, held on Aug. 22, did not reveal any specific dialog windows or new information regarding North Korea's request for a civil aviation agency review of South Korea’s drone incursion, or North Korea's participation in China's Victory Day ceremony, or leaders of North Korea and Russia attending China's Victory Day celebrations.

President Lee Jae Myung's upcoming trip is likely the topic of the press conference, although the exact focus remains unclear. The conference continues to be held at the Yongsan presidential office in Seoul.
