Soviet Union's dissolution marked the commencement: USSR ceased to exist... Russia emerged victorious!
The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), once a world power with a formidable nuclear strike force, vanished silently on December 31, 1991. This disappearance marked a significant change in the balance of the world, signifying the end of the East-West standoff and the emergence of new, more formidable actors.
The end of the USSR was preceded by the death of its leaders. The disappearance of Stalin in 1953 marked the end of the bloodiest reign in Russian history, while the death of Brezhnev in 1982 left the image of a man and a system whose neurons were destroyed. The removal of Khrushchev in 1964, who was different from other Soviet leaders, also played a role in the USSR's eventual demise.
After Khrushchev's departure, Leonid Brezhnev came to power, representing a different type of leader compared to his predecessors. However, his leadership was unable to prevent the USSR from disappearing without a fight. The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 marked the reunification of Europe, but December 31, 1991, was a determining event in the world's history.
With the disappearance of the USSR, the world stage was freed up for new actors to emerge. Some of these new actors proved to be much more formidable, changing the geopolitical landscape of the world.
The Russian Federation, under President Vladimir Putin, joined the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2012, signifying a shift in Russia's economic policy. President Putin has also taken steps to dismantle the legacy of his predecessor, Dmitry Medvedev.
Despite President Putin's influence, a significant portion of the Russian population expresses dissatisfaction with him but lacks a clear strategy for his removal. The future of Russia remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: the fall of the USSR has had a lasting impact on the world.
