The highly anticipated tenth flight of SpaceX's Starship, scheduled for 6:30 pm local time from SpaceX's Starbase in southern Texas, has been postponed. The world's biggest and most powerful launch vehicle was set to embark on an hour-long mission, testing the upper stage before the lower stage booster splashed down in the Indian Ocean.

However, SpaceX announced they were standing down from the flight to troubleshoot an issue with ground systems, without elaborating. This is a common occurrence in space launches.

The recent failures of Starship have started to cast a shadow over SpaceX's golden reputation. Will Lockett, a former engineer turned commentator, argues that the rocket's failure to deliver a payload to orbit yet suggests "the concept of Starship is fundamentally flawed."

Elon Musk, the world's richest man and CEO of SpaceX, is continuing to press ahead with Starship's development. He has staked the company's future on the new system, planning to eventually retire the current generation of rockets and spacecraft in favor of Starship.

Despite criticism from environmental groups over ecological impacts, SpaceX is increasing the frequency of launches. However, the tenth flight of Starship will not attempt to catch the lower stage booster with giant "chopstick" launch tower arms.

After an investigation into the previous failed flight in May, SpaceX plans to intentionally stress the structural limits of the upper stage. This comes as the rocket's upper stage has exploded in all three previous test flights in 2025.

Formidable technical hurdles remain, including making the system fully and rapidly reusable at low cost and proving it can refuel super-cooled propellant in orbit, a prerequisite for deep-space missions.

Dallas Kasaboski, a space analyst for consulting firm Analysys Mason, stated that there is a lot of pressure on the current mission due to previous failures outnumbering successes. The countdown on the company's website suggested there would be another attempt at the same time on Monday evening.

Road closures nearby Starbase indicated that Monday and Tuesday had been cleared for potential attempts. Elon Musk announced that Starship would take off on Monday evening if the launch proceeds as planned.

The failures of Starship have raised questions about the future of SpaceX's ambitious plans. However, Musk remains optimistic, stating that "Starship 10 launching tonight" an hour before lift-off. Despite the postponement, the countdown for the next attempt continues.
