Spahn and Miersch found unexpectedly in Ukraine together - Spahn and Miersch Unanticipatedly United in Ukraine
In a show of solidarity, the leaders of Germany's ruling parties, Jens Spahn and Matthias Miersch, have made an unexpected visit to Ukraine. The visit, taking place in the capital, Kyiv, comes as Russia continues heavy attacks on the city, with air strikes increasing after the Russia-USA summit in Alaska.
The purpose of this visit is twofold. First, to hold talks about further German support for Ukraine, and second, to engage in diplomatic efforts to end the ongoing war. Spahn and Miersch's joint visit is a significant move, serving as a strong signal to both Ukraine and their own parties, demonstrating cooperation after the rocky start of the coalition.
During their visit, the leaders met with Ukrainian officials and paid a visit to German soldiers stationed in Rzeszow, Poland, near the Ukrainian border. These soldiers are protecting an important hub for supplying Ukraine with Western weapons via a train journey to Kyiv.
Spahn emphasizes that the best security guarantee for Ukraine is a well-equipped Ukrainian army. He wants his visit to be seen as a signal to Putin, stating that it is Putin who wants war and does not want peace. Miersch echoes Spahn's sentiment but also suggests that nothing regarding the possible deployment of German troops is ruled out.
The Bundestag plays a crucial role in supporting Ukraine, as it approves budget funds for Ukraine's support and would have the final say if a ceasefire leads to the deployment of German troops. If negotiations fail, Germany is ready to continue supporting Ukraine militarily.
Unfortunately, hopes for serious negotiations between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have faded in the past two weeks. A residential building on the eastern outskirts of Kyiv was severely damaged by a rocket, killing more than 20 people, and two cruise missiles hit a house in the city center, damaging nearby buildings of the European Union’s representation and the British cultural institute, the British Council.
The planned summit between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has not materialized. Despite this setback, Spahn and Miersch's visit to Ukraine underscores Germany's commitment to supporting Ukraine and finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
In Würzburg, the leaders of the coalition parties emphasized the significance of the Ukraine conflict for Europe's security and pledged to help Ukraine defend itself and negotiate from a position of strength. The first time faction leaders Jens Spahn and Matthias Miersch jointly and unexpectedly undertook an official solidarity visit to Ukraine was in early September 2025, marking their first visit to Ukraine. This visit serves as a testament to their commitment to Ukraine's security and stability.
