Spain implements an arms ban toward Israel
Spain's Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, has made a strong statement condemning Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, and has taken immediate action to hold those responsible accountable.
In a bold move, Sánchez accused the Israeli government of the "extermination of a defenseless people" in Gaza, while emphasizing the historical suffering of the Jewish people and their right to have a safe state. However, he did not approve of Israel's actions that result in the bombing of hospitals and the starvation of civilians.
Sánchez's statement about the situation leaves no room for doubt regarding his condemnation of Hamas attacks. He has imposed a weapons embargo against Israel and implemented a ban on importing products from Israeli settlements. Among the immediate measures are a ban on entry for individuals directly involved in the "massacre" in Gaza.
The Prime Minister also criticized the "indifference" and "complicity" of the international community with the Israeli government. He believes that the Jewish people have suffered countless persecutions and injustices, including the Holocaust.
In a show of support for the Palestinian population, Spain will provide increased humanitarian aid for Gaza. Sánchez's stance supports Israel's right to exist while also advocating for the protection of civilians.
Notably, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague initiated proceedings against Israel following an application by South Africa on January 11–12, 2024, alleging violations of the Genocide Convention in the Gaza Strip. The main trial on the genocide accusation will take years. South Africa has filed a lawsuit against Israel for allegedly violating the genocide convention in the Gaza Strip.
The goal of these actions is to support the Palestinian population and ensure those responsible for attacks on civilians are held accountable. The embargo, humanitarian aid, and other measures against Israel are part of an action plan aimed at helping to stop the genocide in Gaza.
