Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez implements extensive sanctions against Israel, alleging genocide in Gaza.
Spain's Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, has announced a package of nine sanctions against Israel in response to the ongoing operations in Gaza and the West Bank. The measures, if approved, are expected to come into effect immediately after Monday's Cabinet meeting.
Sanchez accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, citing UN figures that Israeli operations over the past two years have killed more than 63,000 people, injured 15,900, and displaced nearly 2 million, half of them minors. He also stated that Israeli operations have left 250,000 people facing hunger.
The first measure in the announced sanctions is a formalized arms embargo through a royal decree, banning all trade in weapons, ammunition, and military equipment with Israel. Spain will also bar individuals accused of genocide, war crimes, or rights violations in Gaza from entering the country, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and all members of Israel's government.
Spain will not allow ships carrying fuel for Israeli forces to pass through its ports, nor will it allow flights transporting defense materials through its airspace. The country will also ban imports from Israeli settlements on Palestinian land.
In addition to these measures, Spain will boost its contribution to UNRWA by β¬10 million ($11.72 million), and will increase its role in humanitarian projects, including the E.U. mission at the Rafah crossing. Spain's humanitarian aid for Gaza will be raised to β¬150 million.
Consular services for Spaniards living in Israeli settlements will be limited. The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, led by Iratxe GarcΓa, have called for suspending the EU association agreement with Israel, imposing an arms embargo, sanctions, and creating a reconstruction plan for Gaza amid ongoing conflict. However, there is no announcement date or confirmation that Spain is pursuing its own decoupling measures.
Sanchez declared that what Israel is doing in Gaza is not defense, but destroying a defenseless people. He emphasized that Spain stands in solidarity with the people of Palestine and will continue to work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
