Speaking in turbulent downpours?
In the midst of a thunderstorm, it's essential to prioritise safety to protect yourself from potential dangers. Dr. BjΓΆrn Schmitz, the federal doctor of the German Red Cross (DRK), offers some valuable advice to help you stay safe during these electrifying weather events.
First and foremost, maintaining a distance of at least one meter from others is crucial to prevent any current flow between people. This is because lightning tends to strike the simplest, often shortest path, preferring tall trees, but also masts or antennas.
In open nature, it's important not to be the highest point. Lightning can strike objects, from trees to roof structures, and seeking shelter under them is never a good idea during a thunderstorm. If you find yourself in such a situation, crouch down, preferably in a depression on the ground.
However, even in open nature, it's recommended to keep your feet close together, with only the balls of your feet touching the ground. This can help minimise the risk of the current travelling through your body if you are struck by lightning.
In addition, Dr. Schmitz advises against seeking protection from the storm by crouching under an umbrella. The misconception that an umbrella can shield you from lightning is a dangerous one. In fact, the lightning will travel through an umbrella into the user's hand, causing significant damage. For this reason, it's best to throw away umbrellas if caught in a storm.
Moreover, walking sticks should also be discarded during a thunderstorm due to their potential to conduct electricity. Similarly, keeping a bike away from oneself is recommended, as metal conducts electricity particularly well.
Another crucial piece of advice is to avoid touching others during a lightning strike. Touching others can be problematic, as the current may travel through both individuals, potentially causing harm. The desire to wait out a lightning storm in a tight embrace with a partner or friend should be avoided.
Lastly, Dr. Schmitz advises being prepared for objects to catch fire or fall due to lightning strikes. It's essential to be vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure your safety during these unpredictable weather events.
By following these tips, you can significantly reduce your risk of harm during a thunderstorm. Stay safe and weather the storm wisely!
