Stewards under scrutiny for the sequence of Lewis Hamilton's penalization during Monza race
In a surprising turn of events, seven-time Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton will start the Monza Grand Prix from the fifth row of the grid, following a five-place penalty for an infraction during the Dutch Grand Prix.
The incident occurred on lap 22, when Hamilton was penalised for speeding past other drivers on the track. Initially, the penalty was set to be 10 places on the grid, but was reduced to five due to Hamilton's acknowledgment of the double waved yellow flag.
Upon learning about the penalty upon returning home after the Dutch Grand Prix, Hamilton expressed shock, stating that he will move forward from the penalty and learn from it.
The penalty given to Hamilton is an unusual one, according to former F1 driver Karun Chandhok. Chandhok believes that the penalty was a "slam dunk" and questions why it was not investigated before the race. He also believes that the penalty should have been applied during the Dutch Grand Prix instead of after the race.
The live telemetry data from the cars and the FIA have access to live telemetry data that could have been used to investigate the incident during the Dutch Grand Prix. However, it is unclear why the penalty was not applied until after the race.
During the Dutch Grand Prix, mechanics, camera crews, and other people were standing on the track, potentially causing a hazard. The Race Director had warned drivers about a double waved yellow flag through Turn 14 during the race.
Hamilton had an argument about a penalty related to his speed on the way to the grid in the Dutch Grand Prix. The penalty for his infraction during the Dutch Grand Prix resulted in a five-place grid penalty at the Monza Grand Prix.
In Formula 1, penalties for incidents in a previous race must be determined within a certain timeframe after evidence has been obtained to ensure timely resolution and fairness. In the case of Lewis Hamilton's penalty at the 2023 Italian Grand Prix, this regulation was not applied because the stewards took longer to review and finalize the investigation, leading to a delayed decision beyond the expected period.
No information about the F1 2025 championship, the updated Drivers' and Constructors' Championship standings was provided. Hamilton's race in the Dutch Grand Prix was over due to the crash, and it remains to be seen how the five-place grid penalty will affect his performance at the Monza Grand Prix.
