Stocks in Europe close the week on a downward note

The European and US markets concluded the week on a mixed note, with some sectors experiencing gains while others witnessed declines.

In Dublin, the Iseq All Share Index ended the week with a 0.5% gain, finishing at 11,306. Bank of Ireland ended the week with minor gains, closing at €12.92, while Permanent TSB also gained by the close of the session. Cairn Homes was up almost 0.5%, and Glanbia was largely flat. Home builder Glenveagh rose 1.54%. Irish Continental Group, however, was 0.35% lower by the end of the day.

The pan-European STOXX 600 ended 0.16% lower, and the domestically focused FTSE 250 closed 0.5% higher but logged its second straight weekly decline. The home builders' index in London rose, led by Berkeley, up 3%.

The energy index in Europe dropped by 1.8%, with giants Shell and BP down 2.2% and 2.6% respectively. Energy stocks in London fell 2.4%. On the other hand, the European region's regional banks saw a decline of 1.3%.

Hexagon, a Swedish industrial technology group, experienced a significant increase of about 7.4% after selling its design & engineering business. Orsted gained 2.7% after a proposed $9.4 billion rights issue.

In New York, Wall Street's main indexes eased from record highs. Banks in New York fell 2.2%, with Broadcom surging 9.8% in New York after forecasting fourth-quarter revenue above estimates.

Notable movements were also seen in the corporate world. Jean-Pierre Brulard resigned as CEO of Temenos, a banking software group, with immediate effect in early September 2025 after only 16 months in the position. CFO Takis Spiliopoulos took over as interim CEO. The company's shares tanked 16% following the announcement. Lululemon Athletica plunged 17.5% in New York after cutting its annual profit forecast.

In the insurance sector, FBD closed at €14.50, down 0.34%. Insulation specialist gained more than 2% to finish at €69.40.

In the aviation sector, Ryanair closed the day at €24.04, a rise of 0.4%.

Britain's FTSE 100 closed lower in London, with a 0.1% decrease.
