Stolen Catalytic Converters: A Growing Problem
In the heart of Rhein-Kreis Neuss, a series of unusual crimes have been reported, targeting catalytic converters in the municipalities of Neuss and Korschenbroich.
Between October 20 and 21, 2020, several vehicles were affected by these thefts. A grey Daimler Chrysler and a black VW Lupo on Nixhütter Weg in Neuss-Selikum had their catalysts stolen between 6 am and 4:30 pm on October 20. In Korschenbroich, a resident noticed that her Mercedes was making loud noises while driving, and a workshop found that the catalyst had been removed. The car was parked on a parking lot on Werner-von-Siemens-Straße during the suspected time of the crime, between 9 am and 4:15 pm on October 21. Another catalyst theft occurred on a car-sharing parking lot on Rheydter Straße in Neuss, affecting a grey VW Golf. The crime likely took place between 9 am and 2:30 pm on October 21.
The perpetrators involved in these crimes have not been publicly identified. It is unusual for catalysts to be targeted by thieves, as they are tailored to the respective vehicle, suggesting these may be commissioned crimes.
As a response to these events, the local police are investigating all cases and ask witnesses who have made suspicious observations at the crime scenes to contact them at telephone number 02131 300-0.
