Stolen cell phone incident
Cologne Police Successfully Arrest Suspect in Phone Theft Case
In an unusual turn of events, Cologne police were able to successfully apprehend a 18-year-old suspect involved in a phone theft incident that took place on the station plaza last Thursday (7th August).
The alleged victim in this case is a 49-year-old visitor from Duisburg. According to reports, the theft occurred around 19:15, with the suspect making off with a smartphone that was between the victim's legs at the time.
The suspect was located near Cologne Cathedral later that evening, with the arrest taking place on Kurt-Hackenberg-Platz. The quick arrest was made possible thanks to a collaborative effort between officers on the ground and the video control center.
An officer forwarded a photo of the thief to the video control center, and using the footage, staff were able to reconstruct the crime and describe the suspect. With this crucial information, a patrol car was informed of the suspect's location, and the 18-year-old was arrested on the spot.
It is worth noting that the 18-year-old could not currently prove a fixed residence within the federal territory, adding an additional layer of complexity to the case. The individual arrested is also suspected of phone theft, and is to be brought before a judge later today.
The 49-year-old whose smartphone was reportedly stolen is an Austrian man from Kolsass. However, there is no mention of a smartphone theft or his current place of residence in the sources. The man had left his wallet in an unlocked car when it was stolen, but it is unclear if the phone was also taken in this incident.
Despite the challenges presented by this case, the Cologne police were able to use technology and teamwork to bring the suspect to justice. This successful arrest serves as a reminder of the importance of collaboration and vigilance in maintaining public safety.
