In the heart of the Austrian Alps, a thrilling rescue operation unfolded in the regions of Lungau, Salzburger and Vorarlberg over the weekend.

Two ski tourers from Lower Austria and three winter sports enthusiasts from New Zealand and Australia found themselves in a precarious situation after getting lost in avalanche-prone areas and steep terrain while descending from Preber (2,740 meters) in Lungau, Salzburger.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday afternoon, prompted the tourists to call for help and provide their coordinates. The mountain rescue team in Tamsweg, equipped with a rope system, embarked on a challenging mission to reach the lost parties. They had to climb an additional 400 meters in altitude to rescue the two 26 and 27-year-old men and the 26-year-old woman.

Meanwhile, in Vorarlberg, another group of winter sports athletes ended up in steep terrain due to a lack of local knowledge and poor planning. A police helicopter was dispatched, and it safely brought the lost tourists to the valley. The mountain rescue team in Vorarlberg did not need to climb any additional altitude to reach the stranded parties.

The rescued parties, including the two ski tourers in Lungau, were soaked and slightly chilled but otherwise unharmed. The mountain rescue teams commended the tourists for their quick thinking in calling for help and providing their coordinates, which undoubtedly expedited the rescue operation.

The operation to rescue the two ski tourers in Lungau took more than four hours, while the operation in Vorarlberg was completed more swiftly. Both incidents serve as a reminder of the importance of proper planning and local knowledge when venturing into the mountains.

The mountain rescue teams in both regions emphasised the danger zones these tourists had entered, with cliffs and avalanche-prone areas posing significant risks. The incidents underscore the vital role these teams play in ensuring the safety of outdoor enthusiasts in the Austrian Alps.
