Street Assault Indictment: Individual Charged with Choking Female Conscious during Midtown Attack

A 37-year-old man named Anthony Smith from New York City has been indicted on several charges following an alleged incident in Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan.

According to reports, on August 10, around 3:30 a.m., Smith approached a woman from behind on West 47th Street near Eighth Avenue. He is accused of choking the woman until she lost consciousness.

The District Attorney's Office in New York City, led by Alvin Bragg, has been handling the case through its Special Victims Division. The grand jury, in a statement, has charged Smith with two counts of attempted rape in the first degree, two counts of first-degree sexual abuse, and two counts of strangulation.

The woman was sexually assaulted after losing consciousness, according to the indictment. Smith is also accused of sexually assaulting the woman while she was unconscious.

The incident occurred in the heart of Midtown West, a bustling area of Manhattan, where Smith was reportedly observed for approximately an hour, reportedly following women and adjusting his pants.

The search results do not provide direct information about which organization or institution investigated Smith or which police station in Manhattan is responsible for his case.

Smith was arrested in his apartment on August 13, following an investigation by the Special Victims Division of the DA's office. Attorneys representing Smith from the NY County Defender Services declined to comment on the indictment.

District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced the indictment on Wednesday. The case is currently being handled by his Special Victims Division.

The woman began to regain consciousness during the assault, at which point Smith fled. It is unclear if there were any other witnesses to the incident.

The indictment was filed in New York State Supreme Court. The charges against Smith are serious and carry significant penalties if proven in court. The next steps in the case are yet to be determined.
