Street Clash at the intersection of XX September and Arcivescovado: Bus versus Jeep Leads to Chaos

A tragic incident occurred in 2015 when a 15-year-old boy was fatally struck by a vehicle due to a collision. Neighbors are advocating for the installation of a traffic light in the area to enhance road safety.

Street Clash at the intersection of XX September and Arcivescovado: Bus versus Jeep Leads to Chaos

In the heart of the historic centre, the intersection of Via XX Settembre and Via dell'Arcivescovado has been a recurring site of accidents for over a decade. At least one incident has occurred annually, with historical accidents occurring every month.

The latest accident, which took place today around 4:30 PM, involved a Gtt bus on line 11 and a Jeep Renegade. Fortunately, the accident did not result in serious injuries, but the bus driver required an ambulance due to shock. The accident temporarily stopped traffic and diverted other bus lines to nearby streets.

Despite the precautions taken, such as the installation of a speed hump at sidewalk height after Morris Divorziati's accident in 2015, larger and more visible road signs, and the moving of the bus stop further ahead several years ago, the frequency of accidents at the intersection has not decreased since 2015.

The main causes of these accidents have been identified as poor visibility and driver distraction. Luigi Ventura, president of the association of traders on Via XX Settembre, has been advocating for the installation of flashing traffic lights to warn drivers of the danger at this intersection.

In a recent report to Circoscrizione 1, Ventura highlighted the ongoing issue, expressing concern for the safety of both pedestrians and drivers. He cited the fact that driver distraction often leads to ignoring stop and yield signs at the intersection as a significant contributing factor.

Requests have been made in the past to establish a 30 km/h zone throughout the block to improve safety, but the search results do not provide information about who has applied in recent years to establish a temporary 30 km/h restricted zone at the dangerous intersection.

The most recent accident is not the first tragic incident at this intersection. In October 2015, a 28-year-old man named Morris Divorziati was run over by a taxi at the same spot.

As the community continues to grapple with this ongoing issue, it is hoped that further measures will be taken to ensure the safety of all who use this intersection.
